Meet Us for AustinSEM’s July Event

Well, Austin SEM-ers, we are in the throes of summer, and it’s time to cool off and have a drink with your favorite Search Marketing group.
This month we’ve selected Opal Divine’s Marina on Parmer & MoPac.
We will be getting together on Wednesday, July 28th, starting at 5:30, so come prepared to regale us with SEM Stories, PPC Parables, and maybe even SEO Sea Shanties (sea shanties optional).

Changing of the Guard

Hey AustinSEM,

Got some news, good and bad. What do you want first? Good?

There are some awesome people taking the reins of AustinSEM. Nadia King, Jack Leblonde, Taylor Pratt, and Nate Griffin are going to be heading up this awesome group now. But why you ask?

That’s the good/bad news. As some of you might know, I am now a Seattle-ite. I’ve taken a job in Seattle and just moved up here. I love Austin, and will most likely be back, but for now I must relinquish command. You all have a blast, and I will hopefully see you at a show or another event soon. I hear there is a PubCon training going on in Austin in July. I won’t be there, but you should try.

Thanks for all the awesome times and for being a part of this group. Keep it going. We always need a place to go to bounce ideas and just be search marketing geeky.

Do Your Part for AustinSEM

So we have been going since August, and things are in full swing, so I am looking for help. I need a few good search marketers in Austin to step up to the plate and help out in a few areas.

Blog Writer – Help recapping new and past events, plus whatever else is going on in Austin.
Social Planner – I will help the most with this, but I need someone to contact places to arrange meetings and such. Someone that is good at locating great Austin spots to have socials and such.
Events Calendar – Keeping up to date with the Austin Tech scene to let the group know via our calendar what is going on, what events to attend and all the juicy details of future tweetups and the like.

If you are interested in helping in any of these areas, even for a small time, please let me know! I’ll give anyone a login to the WordPress account that wants to write a few blog posts now and then.

PubCon South Week!

So we haven’t had any events lately … I am blaming that on the short month, my own busy-ness, and the fact that Austin is being invaded this week. PubCon South starts on Wednesday (I hear there MIGHT be a few more spots open, so sign up now!) and then SXSWi starts Friday/Saturday.

In light of the parties that are happening, and the wide variety of talent invading Austin, we are skipping what was to be a planned event this month and moving it to April. We have a location locked down and an idea to run with. We will be learning, teaching and having fun … and there will be drinks, promise. It’s going to be April 21st at 6pm at Third Base. More details to come after this week.

For the events of this week, check your email for party info, links to more party info, and a details of a small gathering of minds in North Austin on Thursday. I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the events, parties, and just out and about. If you are going to any open events, please post them here for everyone to see, or in the forums for just members.

Remember, if you have that burning question about search marketing and want to hear other’s thoughts, sign up for the AustinSEM forums. The more that our members sign in, answer, and question, the more we get good ideas for our own campaigns.

Nadia recently added a question about Sharepoint. If you have experience with it, login or sign up, and give her your thoughts.

The forums require approval by Kate, so if you don’t hear back within a few hours, comment here and we’ll take care of that immediately. Too many spammers trying to get in means that if you aren’t identifiable, chances are you’ll get rejected.

Fall PubCon Recap

UPDATE: We are inside for right now, on the right hand side.

The next event has been planned for a while, it just took me getting to Vegas to have time to mention it. I hope everyone can join us for a PubCon recap next Thursday, November 20th! We’ll keep it low key like always and just get together at Draught House. Taylor Pratt, Dan Crean, and myself all attended PubCon this week and our own Brett Tabke ran the entire thing. Biggest show of the year and tons of fun so far!

It’s time to talk! AustinSEM Forums

I had heard that you all wanted a forum to discuss things (cough … Brett … cough), ask questions, and just chat. Well, we put one up finally. Please register and get to asking those questions and interacting. If you see any issues, please let me know. You can also talk to @pratt, he’s a moderator as well.

We are really excited to get all of this going and hope it’s as beneficial to you as hoped. Stay tuned for an upcoming announcement about the next event. I’ll be out at PubCon the second week of November. If you’re going to be there let me know, you can heckle me at my sessions.

If anyone ever wants to post something here, just drop me a line, be happy to get you a login.

Note to Self: Library not good for Beer/Pizza

We had a fantastic first meeting to get this whole thing going. But I learned one thing, meeting at the library is not as “free” as it seems to have a meeting. You have to have a Health Department permit to serve food, and that’s $30-40. Not sure what would have happened if I had brought beer.

With that noted, we had a great group of about 10 to bounce ideas around and get the next get together planned. We had a great time talking about how we got into search engine marketing and what we want this group to be.

Something was brought up that I think is worth sharing here. There are tons of groups in Austin that relate to what we do, but still don’t focus on what we do for a living. And I wanted to give those groups some props for being a great resource as well. If you know of others that should be on this list, please let me know.

Look for an announcement on the next get together (not really a meeting, more socializing). For now here’s the date:

Date: October 2, 2008
Place: TBA (Third Base, Belmont, Draught House, Shiner Saloon, etc)
Time: 6-7ish? (TBD)

New Austin SEM Group

We know you’re out there and we know you’re frustrated. I’m talking to the Austin SEO/M’s out there. We feel alone everyday when our coworkers/spouses give us blank stares as we babble about Google/Yahoo/MSN. It’s time we changed all of that.

AustinSEM.org is a group of non-affiliated internet marketers in Austin and surrounding areas. We don’t care where you work, we would prefer not to know. All we care about is building you up as an internet marketer. If you love SEO and want to know more about PPC, we can help. We are there for each other to be a support group of sorts. An area where you can let loose, complain, brainstorm, and most of all grow.
